[Phys-L] Re: THE WEDGE STRATEGY of The ID Movement

That is why I use that word instead of, result of, or produces, etc.

I just thought the correlation was striking enuff to be remarked (worthy
of note). The intention is then to "see" if there is a causal relation.

No one accepted my invitation.

Another correlation (the primary one?) is rural people tend to vote
conservative, even if contrary to their interest. [What's Wrong W/
Kansas?

I don't think slavery and Bush are an accident, but Frank appears to
indicate, yes, or it's very convoluted.

Rick!

I think you ideology may be trumping your vision. Are you implying
because the correlation is more accurately between counties, or better
(scrolling down further) w/ rural counties, and, therefore, has nothing
to do w/ the incidence of slavery?

Well Bernard, just remember until very recently this same region of the U.S.
was called the SOLID SOUTH--that is solidly DEMOCRATIC! Besides the counties
correlation is across the nation--other than for the New England states, and
plenty of states that were not 'slave' states voted for Bush.

So, I don't know what point you are trying to make here from your
socialistic view point--but it is lost on me! ;-)

The point is that, as anyone here should know, correlation does not imply causation. The problem with these "correlations" is that there is often no attempt to identify, much less quantify, the contributions of ALL the variables on the "effect". We see this all the time on the Internet. I've got one guy I "talk to" often who has correlations that he claims show that school causes violence and crime, and that the later kids start school the more successful they are. He has a host of others. ALL his "correlations" ignore the effects of poverty, urbanity, one versus two-parent homes, and on and on. In short, the correlations are meaningless in terms of identifying the ONE variable he concentrates on as the cause of the effect or even a contributor to that effect. Rick, rightly, notes that there are factors that are far more likely to produce this effect than the presence of slavery 140 years ago, since this particular factor (voting for Bush) is shared by significant po
rtions of states that did NOT have
