[Phys-L] Fall 2005 Conference on Case Study Teaching in Science at SUNY Buffalo

Announcing the 6th ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON CASE STUDY TEACHING IN SCIENCE

Sponsored by: The National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science,
State University of New York at Buffalo, with additional
support provided by the National Science Foundation

Dates: October 7 & 8, 2005

Venue: University Inn & Conference Center, Buffalo, New York

http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/projects/cases/conference/conference.html

The aim of our annual fall conference is to bring together people who are
interested in teaching science using case studies. Our 2-day conference
features two tracks, one for newcomers to the method, and the other
designed for more experienced case method teachers who want to hone their
skills.

This year's program includes sessions on using classic research articles
as problems; assessing case-based instruction; preparing peer facilitators
for cooperative learning groups; designing laboratory-based cases;
bringing closure to problems using concept maps; writing cases based
on the "Case Difficulty Cube"; and teaching with cases in large-enrollment
courses, among others. In addition, there will be a poster and a paper
session.

Dr. Clyde (Kipp) Herreid, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and
Director of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science, is our
conference leader. Mini-plenary speakers are Harold B. White III,
Professor of Biochemistry and Director of The Howard Hughes Medical
Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program at the University of
Delaware, and Karen Maitland Schilling, Professor and Chair, Department of
Psychology, Miami University.

Our NSF CCLI National Dissemination grant allows us to offer travel
reimbursement to and from the conference for faculty attending the
conference from a designated Historically Black College or University,
Tribal College or University, or Hispanic Serving Institution.

Early bird registration (before or on September 13, 2005) is $250.00.
Regular registration (after September 13, 2005) is $300.00. Registration
includes a buffet lunch and morning/afternoon coffee breaks on Friday and
Saturday plus the Friday evening reception and banquet. Please note that
hotel rooms at the conference hotel must be reserved by September 9, 2005,
to get the special conference rate.
