[Phys-L] Re: Sound

The earth radiates over a wide band of infrared wavelengths and cools
significantly. The low moisture desert air is a poor absorber and emitter -
it cools by contact with the ground - creating an inversion. The low
moisture content should limit fog formation. I assume Iraq is similar to
Nevada - hot days, cold nights. I used to live about 15 miles North of Reno.
The way sound carried and was amplified at night was amazing - especially
sounds from nearby airports.

This means the air near the earth radiates (loses internal energy) more
than the air above it, or the earth radiates more than the atmosphere
and cools the air just above it by conduction, or both or either, and
the cooler (denser) air sinks?

Is there fog nowadays in Iraq?

bc, what?
