[Phys-L] Deep Impact

Alerted by the poetry list to which I subscribe, (!)
I repeat here a note, supposing you might be interested in the
comet impact experiment mounted in January by NASA.
First of several impacts is due to take place in about one hour.

Subject: Deep Impact

Dear Members,

For anyone who might be interested in Deep Impact here is the web
address where you can watch video on it. You might even get
inspiration for a good poem...Aloha, Connie

Humankind will get it's first look inside a comet tonight. NASA
scientists working on the Deep Impact mission will steer a 39-inch
wide impactor spacecraft into the comet Tempel 1 over 80 million
miles away. A flyby spacecraft will observe the impact and send back
pictures and other scientific data back to Earth.

"So you'll be witnessing tonight, for the first time ever, the
unveiling of what comet's interiors are made of," said Jet
Propulsion Laboratory Director Dr. Charles Elachi. "So imagine that
tomorrow our knowledge of our solar system will be different than
what it is today and a new trail will have been laid out for
exploration that other people or the next generation will follow in
the future."
