I have often heard this sentiment.
I did not look it up - but recall only that the first and second world wars
accounted for tens of millions of deaths, none of whom appeared to have
been killed for their religious convictions. Then, more recently Ruanda
saw a million or more of a tribal group cut down.

In earlier times, civilians were spared the ultimate sacrifice in general -
so it was more difficult to provide wholesale slaughters, I would have thought.

Hence this claim is somewhat extraordinary.
