It is much more interesting to do the demo in class.
You don't need a shuttle tile, either. An ordinary
firebrick will do just fine.
Dabbing a bit of salt on the brick will make things
more visible and all-around more impressive.
Sodium ions suffice, but other ions are fun, too.
Use a separate brick for the non-sodium ions, because
sodium is soooo bright that it will overwhelm the
other stuff, and you'll have a hard time getting
rid of all of it.
