[Phys-L] Portrait of a Visible Light Wave

Here's a portrait of a visible light pulse.
From Nature, Vol 427, p 817 by way of
New Scientist 9 April 2005 p37

A visible light wave passes through neon gas.
An attosecond X-ray pulse is fired.
The pulse extracts electrons from atoms.
An electron detector measures the transit time
variation of electrons in a drift field towards
an electron detector.
The electric field of the light pulse
varies the ejected electrons' positions with respect
to the light pulse, so that a time-lapse sequence
of the wave is compiled.
