Dear PODers,
PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO YOUR ENGINEERING FACULTY COLLEAGUES.
Thanks,
Karl Smith
Dear Engineering Faculty,
Are you interested in learning how to conduct more rigorous engineering
education research? If so, CONDUCTING RIGOROUS RESEARCH IN ENGINEERING
EDUCATION, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, may be for you.
This program, intended for those who want to conduct high-quality
engineering education research, begins with a five day 4-1/2 workshop
July 31 - August 5, 2005.
Participants will learn:
(1) how to formulate a 'good' research question,
(2) how to use appropriate research designs and conceptual
frameworks, and
(3) what research tells us about how people (especially engineering
students) learn.
Following the session, participants will conduct the research they designed
and report on the findings. Their work will be supported by a $2000
mini-grant as well as by research mentoring and on-going conversations with
the participants, the facilitators, and the broader higher education
research community.
Participants must pay for their own travel to and from Golden, Colorado. All
other costs (hotel, food, materials) will be covered by the project.
The session is funded by the National Science Foundation [NSF DUE-0341127],
and sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education
(ASEE) in collaboration with the American Educational Research
Association (AERA) and the Professional and Organizational
Development Network in Higher Education (POD). Project coordinators
are Drs. Ruth Streveler of the Colorado School of Mines and Karl
Smith of the University of Minnesota.
Applications for the 2005 Rigorous Research in Engineering Education
workshop are now being accepted at:
Ruth Streveler, Colorado School of Mines
Karl Smith, University of Minnesota
