[Phys-L] Re: Davisson & Germer and Nobel Prize

Didn't a famous (UCB) laureate get sued by his grad student and win over
a similar omission?

Can anyone shed any light on why Germer was passed over for the Nobel
Prize? And/or why did Thomson share the prize with Davisson even though
Thomson published after Davisson and Germer, plus "Thomson's work" might
have been mostly done by Reid, but Reid died in a motorcycle accident
about the time the paper was published?

Was something funny going on, such as G.P. Thomson being the son of J.J
Thomson? Or was the omission of Germer (and Reid?) just one of the
things that happens when people have to decide to whom to give awards?
