2. Google also mentions that dc is sometimes used instead of ac for
long-distance transmission. Can someone give a brief explanation of
the most important advantages and trade-offs involved?

Others have mentioned the upper voltage limit due to air breakdown.
That will determine the MAXIMUM voltage during the ac cycle.

Running DC at that maximum voltage delivers about 30% more power than
the RMS ac voltage.
(RMS = .707 of the max.)
