[Phys-L] Re: collision question

"Some is used to deform the can (mechanical work)."

This "flows" into PE. This is recovered when annealed.

Forget collisions. Let's make it a bit more simple:
If it takes mechanical energy to step on an empty tin can and crush it,
Some of this energy is released as heat to the surroundings during the
crushing. Where does the rest of the energy go?

Some is heat (thermal energy) to be found in the crashed metal. Some is
used to deform the can (mechanical work). A tiny fraction appears as
sound.
