[Phys-L] Re: WriteCDE (California Standards Test, Physics 2003/04)

Even in the absence of a formal organizational participation in the
development of standardized tests, individual physicists can be more
involved in the process. Last year, I participated in the development
of the physics test that prospective physics teachers take in OK.
Although we did not compose the original questions - that was done by
employees of the National Evaluation Systems, Inc. (NES) - we did edit
them to avoid problems similar to the ones highlighted in the CA tests
for students.

I encourage members of this list to seek out opportunities to
participate in the development of standardized tests. My participation
last year was initiated when a colleague passed along a solicitation
from NES. I would contact your state department of education if you are
interested in improving the standardized tests in your state. The only
compensation I received was free meals and lodging and reimbursement for
travel expenses, but I feel that my participation was worthwhile. They
also reimbursed school districts for substitute teachers for
participants.

Hi all-
Clearly we need a more formal organization (the AAPT?) for
dealing with this bureaucracy.
