Imagine a sheet of butcher paper placed over the wall. Assuming
the paper didn't tear during the collision, how would you know if
you hit a wall or an identical car? Damage must be same in both
cases.

Of course, it's more damaging to the ego to hit a big stationary
wall than to have someone else hit you head on.
