Knowles Science Teaching Foundation
2005 Teaching Fellowship

The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) is seeking applicants for
its fourth cohort of Teaching Fellows - individuals who have at least a
bachelor’s degree in science and are committed to becoming licensed high
school science teachers. Additionally, in 2005, KSTF will admit its
first cohort of mathematics teaching fellows and is seeking applicants
with at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics who intend to become
high school mathematics teachers. KSTF was established in 1999 to
strengthen the quality of science and mathematics teaching in grades
7-12 in US schools. KSTF supports individuals and programs designed to
encourage and sustain young scientists as they dedicate their lives to
teaching other young people and to becoming leaders in the field of
education.

Eligibility Requirements:
For the science fellowship program, applicants must have at least a
bachelor’s degree in a physical science (physics, chemistry, astronomy
or geology) or engineering and be committed to teaching secondary
science in US schools. For the mathematics fellowship program,
applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and be
committed to teaching secondary mathematics in US schools. KSTF does not
currently have a fellowship program for the biological sciences.

Fellowships are intended for individuals enrolling in recognized teacher
credential programs. In some cases, the fellowship may be awarded to
individuals who have completed a credential and are in their first year
of teaching.

Award information:
Fellowships will be awarded to up to 15 individuals in the math program
and 15 in the science program. Fellows will receive up to 5 years of
fellowship support. While individuals are enrolled in a recognized
teacher certification program, fellowship support includes up to $10,000
per year tuition assistance and up to $1000 per month stipend as well as
room, board, travel expenses and fees for summer professional
development activities. Once fellows have begun teaching full time, they
are eligible for instructional grants up to $1000 per year and
school-site mentor support. Additionally, the award includes room,
board, and travel expenses to three Fellows’ Meetings per year and
membership in a professional organization throughout the 5-year fellowship.

Application information:
Application instructions can be found online at www.kstf.org. The
deadline for application is February 1, 2005. For more information and
