Re: fun with tides

Jim Green asked if John Denker were serious about no ocean tides at the
equator. Jim, did you look at all the references, including the last
one?

John was pointing out an example of "bad science" and he even gave a
reference to data that clearly shows strong tides at a location just 2
degrees south of the equator.

John left it to readers to figure the correct version for themselves.
In case people didn't want to take the time to figure it out, I
presented some sites I was aware of that do it right. The NOAA site is
one I use as an example when I teach about harmonic analysis.

For another example of actual tides at a place near the equator,
compared to a place further from the equator, check out

http://www.co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/tides04/tab2wc1a.html#122

where you can see that the tides in the Pacific Ocean for the Panama
Canal area (about 8 deg N latitude) show significantly greater tidal
variation than San Diego (about 38 deg N latitude).
