This isn't an explanation, however, some phenomenology:
It's quite typical for high order harmonics to damp out quicker than low
order harmonics. I.e. The fundamental is typically a higher Q situation,
than higher harmonics.
I think your observation (which our students see all the time when we do the
same lab) is a manifestation of this phenomena.
