Re: who really "knows his/her stuff"?

There may be another minor but not unimportant factor in looking at Ph.Ds
for College positions (University positions should not even be a question).
AGE. While if I were hiring a LECTURER in physics for intro courses, I
would look seriously at an _experienced_ HS teacher, I would never look at a
fresh B.S. in physics. Those 5-6 years in graduate school (and perhaps
another 2 as a post-doc) gives the Ph.D. candidate a 'separation' from the
students that can be important to a smooth running classroom.

Rick (who gave a talk on science-fair projects this morning at my wife's
middle-school but who was admonished last night NOT to tell the students
what P H D stands for! ;-)
