That's why I wrote "may". I should have written some. My very old (ca.
1960) bug 's meter's pointer, when not moving, was sl. above the pin;
reversing, it moved to the pin. I replaced the cable once and repaired
(lubed) the meter several times. If I remember correctly the connection
was well after the transmission. It's possible a connection was
ratched, but it had to be where one screwed the cable into the axle.

If one removes the pin, it might read below the zero. Same w/
d'Arsonval meters (usually no pin.)

zero. But your statement is true for digital speedometers.
