Physics or metaphysics?

Kilmer's message made me think about something
that has nothing to do with his question. We often
idealize strings and springs as massless. So I was
thinking about such string, and a bob attached. A
conical pendulum rotates in a perfect vacuum
chamber. Then the bob is cut off (by some kind of
a remote controlled blade) and falls down.

What happens to the string after the tension is
removed? Will it continue move in the same way
in which it was when the bob was attached or not?
Keep in mind that zero mass particles have no
weight and their behavior is not subjected to
Newton's first law.

Yes, I know that this situation is purely hypothetical.
But does it mean that the question should be
dismissed? Please do not think that am trying to
advocate another string theory.
