Re: online dictionaries etc.

I rrecently discovered the "Wikipedia" where, for the first time,
I was introduced to the concept of "surreal numbers". I think that
surreal numbers are almost as exciting as the "hyperreal" numbers that
underlie Abraham Robinson's Non-Standard Analysis.

In addition to google, another good online source is
http://dict.leo.org/?search=jo-jo

It doesn't know about "Maxwell wheel" or "Maxwell Rad" but it
will give you the correct translation for "das jo-jo".

If you forget the URL of that resource, you can always
find it by googling "German dictionary".

You can also get there by googling "deutsches Wörterbuch"
but -- interestingly -- "deutsches Worterbuch" does not work
nearly so well. Google can be very, very literal-minded.
Even more suprisingly, dict.leo.org is ranked pretty low
(about #25) under "englishes Wörterbuch" ... very odd.

Some online dictionaries are nearly worthless, but some of
them are pretty good.

A truly remarkable one is
http://www.global-language.com/CENTURY/
The dictionary is broad and deep ... and authoritative, and
just plain beautiful. The only limitation is that is 100
years old, so it doesn't know about yo-yos or airplanes or
various other things.

Note that it is worth downloading the free DjVu viewer plugin.

(DjVu compressors are also available, some free and some not,
in case you want to originate your own content in DjVu format.)
