As I recall, I was first introduced to F = dp/dt = m dv/dt + v dm/dt in
my astrophysics class when we had to take into account the change in
mass due to relativistic effects. All non-relativistic applications of
this relationship end up with dm/dt = 0 and can handled using straight
Newtonian F = m dv/dt .
