Also, since the blanket metaphor and the greenhouse
metaphor are misleading, can anybody suggest something
better?

Craig Bohren's book "What Light Through Yonder Window Breaks" has a chapter
on the greenhouse effect:

"In a chapter on the greenhouse effect, the author highlights various
aspects of this phenomenon including the inappropriate metaphor of the
earth's atmosphere acting as a blanket trapping radiated heat."
