What happened is this:
Once upon a time somebody who had a monopoly
decided to unlawfully exploit and extend the
monopoly. One of the tactics was to "extend"
(i.e. mutilate) industry standards, so as to
impose disproportionate costs on would-be
competitors and to create problems for users
who dared to use off-brand software or failed
to buy the latest upgrade of the monopoly
software.
