I think John's puzzle is the more interesting, too.

For the sinking block, the water level falls
For the floating block, the water level
is unchanged.

Given that the block was originally specified as wood,
this implies a rather restricted range of woods
for the sinker: iron wood, ebony, and a few other
exotics of this kind, not always to be found in the
usual New York kitchen.
