The physics is simply that the conventional current in a resistor flows DOWN
a potential hill. IOW, there is a DROP in potential across a resistance, in
the direction of the conventional current. This is what your mathematical
model, and its conventions, must take into account when applying Kirchoff's
(spelling?) rules.
