Re: MentorNet (one woman's response)

As they say "travel broadens the mind."

My experience was quit different. I was always respected and some Kenyans were too
deferential.

Once it was only after I 'd finished shopping in a huge outdoor market, when I
realized I was the only "muzungu" among 500 others.

bc

p.s. great response; I must remember it.

I submit that the "what shall we do" part is premature
when many folks deny the existence of a problem. At a
lunchtime discussion last year, one of my colleagues
was railing against affirmative action for a variety
of reasons. I posed this question to her: "If you were
a male fetus and could choose your skin color, what
would you choose?" She paused a moment and said, "I
see what you mean". I have been fortunate to have
lived for several years in a Caribbean island nation
(as a minority). It was illuminating to experience
what it feels like to live in a situation (although in
many ways idyllic) where the rules are made
exclusively by the majority and you can be jerked
around at will by "the man". Gives one a different
perspective. John Barrere
