Re: Why Not Give References?

Sometimes there are reasons for not giving references, as in the
example where Dick quoted me. In the case of a common mathematical
definition, one has access to one's own references (do you really need
help in locating Britannica - it's on the web). It would be anomolous and
interesting if someone came up with a definition of Clifford Algebra that
was different in my own book -which, in any case, I had cited previously.

Jack

As a consequence, the Pea reference that I gave contained an outdated
URL. The correct reference is given below at Pea (1999). I have, of
course, been inundated by frantic requests from Phys-L'ers for the
correct URL. Sorry for the confusion.

Three brief comments on recent Phys-L posts on this thread:

That does not make any sense in science.
Do you agree with me?
KOWALSKI-KOWALSKI-KOWALSKI-KOWALSKI-KOWALSKI--KOWALSKI-KOWALSKI

NO. I disagree with you. My forty years of research in
superconductivity and magnetism, and 16 years in physics-education
research demonstrate to me that Wilde's skepticism regarding other
people's opinions makes good sense in science. Furthermore the
converse of Wilde's skepticism:

"When people disagree with me I always feel that I must be right"

also makes good sense; especially when the "people" are Doubters Club
members Robert Ehrlich (see Hake 2002), Diane Grayson, Glenn Julian,
Rick Tarara, and Jack Uretsky.

Yes, we should provide more complete references, but the one I gave
can be easily traced down on Amazon by a search under the word
Feuerstein.

I disagree with John's statement that Feuerstein is "easily traced
down" at Amazon. I went to Amazon Search Books at
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ats-query-page/ref%3Db%5Ftn%5Fbo/104-4372389-8616739>
and typed "Feuerstein" (without the quotes) in the Author slot to
obtain 94 hits. Then I had to spend about 10 minutes scrolling though
9 pages to finally get to hit #84 (Feuerstein 1985). I note that this
is NOT the same reference (Feuerstein et al. 1980) that I gave in my
original 20 Sep 2002 15:00:25-0700 post on this thread. (I distrust
the Amazon reference because I have found that bibliographic
information at Amazon is sometimes erroneous.)
