Hospitals were unspeakably filthy.

Its my understanding that the leading cause of death in the US (after
cancers and cardiac situations) are nosocomial infections. (Diseases
contracted while at the hospital)

Life expentancy was under 45,

Which *does not* mean that the curve of "age at death" vs. "age" peaks
around age 45. There were plenty of people living into their 60's 500 years
ago.

IMO it would be more appropriate to quote life expectancies for people who
made it past age 5 (or perhaps 10), if you want to get better an idea of
when the adults were dropping off.
