So is "vapor" better or "gas" better? It seems to me that "vapor" is the
accepted term. If you feel it should not be, please explain why.

Since a vapor is a gas, it probably would be better for K-12 students to
learn that "vapor" is an unscientific term which means "vaporous" or foggy
material.

Students in undergrad programs will want to know the correct terminology.

In other words, try killing off "vapor" at the K-12 level, then re-learn
the corrected term later on. That way you will tend to have fewer
professionals who think that a "vapor" is suspended fog or mist.
