Hi Dave
Probably the most current and best layman's book on Superstring/Membrane
theory is "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. Another very good book
though dated is "Superstrings and the Search for the theory of everything" by
Peat. Also you shouldn't neglect Lee Smolin book "Quantum Gravity" for an
interesting and potentially important connection between string theory and
Loop Quantum gravity.
