I can't resist paraphrasing Rick's meanderings with one sentence. The back
of my mind also asks many of the same questions?

Are we throwing out the baby with bath-water?

This question comes up in a different context. Many Physics departments are
trying to sell themselves and their major as a good preparation for
"non-physics" careers. E.g, going into finance. The idea is that a
traditional physics major in the past has been excellent preparation for
other fields. (Extra Credit: Who is Max Delbruck?).

Some departments have added that we should have students take extra
non-physics courses to help with their non-physics careers. Which seems
like a reasonable approach. But the bathwater question again rears its head
in my mind.
