Re: Q about pretest score

In her Physhare post of 6 Feb 2002 15:28:58-0600 titled "Q about
pretest score", Edie Dukek wrote: "Will someone please e-mail to me
the formula for finding percent of growth comparing results of a
pretest and results of a posttest?"

It's possible that Edie is requesting information on the "average
normalized gain" <g>, defined as the actual gain, %<Gain>, divided by
the maximum possible actual gain, %<Gain>max:

<g> = %<Gain> / %<Gain>max . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (1a)
<g> = ( %<posttest> - %<pretest>) / (100 - %<pretest>) . . (1b)

where %<posttest> and %<pretest> are the final (posttest) and initial
(pretest) class percentage averages.

For information on the rationale, use, and history of the normalized
gain see, e.g., Hake (2001) and Hake (2002).
