Back in November, Brian Whatcott brought to our attention the news that
meteorite observers had repeatedly reported hearing sounds apparently
related to meteorites which they were seeing. This was attributed to
VLF radio waves generated by the meteorites' passage into Earth's
atmosphere.
There is more information available online regarding the physics of that
phenomenon now that the results of a 1998 Leonid observing expedition to
Mongolia have been accepted for publication in the American Geophysical
Union's Journal of Geophysical Research. Expedition members were from
institutions in Croatia, Italy, Switzerland and the US.
Information, news release, pictures, sounds, etc, are at:
Sounds reported were "pop", "whoosh", "crackling" and "sizzling".
Best wishes,
Larry
