I don't have the reference but I recall an article from a language study
about the names that colors have and the fact that different languages have
not always divided the color spectrum up the same way.
an experiment was done with some very large number of colored plastic chips
that had people pile them up in stacks that (could) share the same color
name like pink and red and blue and green) and then had them select one from
the stack that they could consider the basic shade that they would call red,
etc.
The simplest language split was the Warm color and the cold color that only
made two piles. As I recall, there was a predictable sequence of colors
being added to languages
I don't remember if this was in a book on perception or linguistics. anyone
else havemore information?
