Re: Magnetic N and S poles

In India we were using "Electricity and Magnetism" by S.G.Starling
(Longmans) and one of the volumes of "Text book of Physics" by
Grimshell (Blackie) in 1950s. It was H and not B that was the
field associated with magnetism that we were taught. Books with
B as the magnetic field (mostly American) were just coming into
the market. Even at M.S. we were using Sir James Jeans book
for EM which dealt with H. Right now I cannot remember whether
that book even mentioned about B.There were many experiments
associated with H like Deflection Magnetometer ( tanA and tanB
positions), Vibration Magnetometer, Tangent Galvanometer etc.

Two comments, Ludwik.

(1) If Harnwell's (senior) text book in 1938 used the Lorentz law to define
B, it could well have been the impetus for the next generation of
introductory books to go down that path, just as treatments of "modern"
physics in introductory books would have fed off Richtmeyer's excellent
text "Introduction to Modern Physics" (1928, 1934, ...) .

(2) What were the introductory texts of the 30s and 40s that preceded Sears,
and Hallidy/Resnick and all the clones and derivitives since then? Are any
of these remembered? Are any available for perusal in libraries or library
repositories?
