Thanks Bob,

I just got back from the library, (getting the department xerox card, was an
experience in buauracracy that I care not to repeat).

Its an excellent article that addresses some of the issues I asked about and
more.

In fairness to Tipler's current edition, he appears to have read this
article. The author has an interesting discussion of how such a "tranverse"
wave on a string can carry momentum.

I'd recommend the article to anyone who is at this stage of their
introductory course.
