Re: Obnoxious Student

Tina,
Please don't do what is suggested below unless it is absolutely a last resort.

First call the student aside and have a heart to heart discussion about the
observed behavior and the expected behavior for someone in this position. Ask
the student what they expect your response to be under the circumstances.
Explain that the behavior can not continue because it undermines your efforts
at helping students learn. Make it clear that it must stop or for the sake of
the other students, the student in question will be removed from your class.

Belittling and embarrassing students in front of their peers is never an
appropriate response.

Don't give her what she expects, e.g. retaliation, punishment, etc.
She obviously wants to be the center of attention.
Put her on display. Tell the class she has this problem not getting
enough attention and ask them to provide her it; it may be necessary to
sacrifice a class to up the intensity to her saturation level.
When she's had enough remind her publicly that there are 28 others who
are there to learn; her comments are welcome when they are constructive or
motivated by a genuine desire to learn, but calling attention to herself
per se simply interferes with the legitimate learning activities of
others.
