I offer the following in a spirit of helpfulness, in the hope it will
have educational value.
I have received 5 virus/worm infectors from discussion listservs this
month.
I would like to help all fellow listmembers be aware of 4 critical
elements of anti-virus protection:
(1) Meaningful anti-virus protection must automatically
scan every file that you attempt to open, a
*preventative* to infection.
(2) Scanning the entire harddrive for infection is a
*treatment* approach, which ought to be done every
week as a supplement to automatic scanning.
(3) Meaningful anti-virus protection must be kept
current by carrying out your AV software provider's
online update procedure at least weekly, and
preferably daily.
(4) Even with up-to-date AV protection, it is still not
a good idea to open an E-mail attachment without
confirming its contents with the person whose computer
sent it.
There was a time when one installed anti-virus software, with the
expectation that it would provide protection for many months without
further attention. Those days are long gone.
Before anyone makes a "get a Mac" wisecrack, changing CPU flavors is not
a viable option for many of us.
Best wishes,
Larry
