Energy of a system can be increased or decreased, but it does not "move".

Of course it does move; it can propagate through a surface surrounding a
system. So there! :)


Hmmm. How would a scientist settle such an argument?

It gets even worse. If you believe Einstein, then energy has mass
associated with it (though not very much for typical energies -- hotter
things weigh 'calculably' more, though not measurably so). In that
interpretive light, energy can be thought of as very stuff-like indeed,
and energy flow becomes necessary.
