In class, thus, I do not speak of the acceleration due to
gravity as -9.8 m/s/s, but rather as 9.8 m/s/s downwards. It
may be negative or positive depending on how the problem is
set up.

Exactly how I do it. The teacher, in this case me, must be
willing to accept either positive or negative answers
depending on how the student sets up the problems. The
negative is just an indication of direction. No negative
time is allowed; I think that would mean we are going
backwards in time.
