 From a practical point of view, your student's parent will probably have
the best luck with a digital sharpening filter known as "unsharp mask."
I don't know the algorithm (John D. can help?), but it is included in my
favorite photo manipulation program, Paint Shop Pro (~$100 from JASC
software).
