Re: new deadline - workshop on calculus/physics course

Dawn,
does the workshop feature interactive engagement methods?
Is that a strategy you would advocate?

Fellow Physics Teachers:

this is just to let you know that the deadline for registering for our
calculus/physics workshop (described below) has been moved to June 9th.

The Mathematics Association of American is sponsoring a workshop this
summer on the teaching of an integrated calculus/physics course. The
workshop presenters are myself and Prof. Kelly Black (from the mathematics
department) who have developed this integrated course at University of New
Hampshire over the last 3 years. This development was funded by a grant
from NSF.

Please see the MAA web page <http://www.maa.org/pfdev/prep/black.html> for
more details about the workshop and an application. The workshop is July
10-13 (Tuesday-Friday).

One very important detail: the MAA picks up the cost of everything EXCEPT
transportation. The workshop location is Durham, NH.

Topics to be discussed include:
1) how the calculus topics are reordered to compliment the physics curricula
2) examination of several integrated activities (e.g.,. RC circuits,
electric field due to a bar of charge)
3) how to promote problem solving abilities in students
4) examination of several calculus/physics projects (e.g. When is a spoked
wheel better than an aerodynamic wheel?)
5) assessment of the course
6) active learning strategies
7) group learning
