I thought getting rather near one was enuff to cause them to quack, but then
maybe that only applies to the ones I cared for in Kenya.

I am sure this is a complete science myth.
A duck's quack does not echo.
How can I verify/falsify this without getting a duck?

I searched with altavista.com on +quack +echo +legend and found a report
of an informal experiment:

Even more vaulable info: if you run fast while carrying a barnyard duck,
he flaps his wings and starts quacking like crazy.
