As the saying goes: It's bad luck to "explain" something that isn't true.

How sure are we that the system in question is actually optimal?

According to

there are several different sizes of balls, to match different species of
tables.

I've seen people try to play with balls that are mismatched to the
table. Strange things happen, but it's not always 100% obvious what the
problem is. Has this scenario been ruled out?

Even if the system in question is optimal, it might be very informative to
experiment with larger and smaller balls.
