Thursday's Classroom for April 1, 2001

April Fools Day is a good time to ponder practical jokes and hoaxes -- and
to beware of them! One gag that's going around now is "The Moon Hoax." A
group of conspiracy theorists are claiming NASA astronauts never went to
the Moon. The Apollo program, they say, was filmed in Hollywood or Area
51. But don't let them fool you or your students -- the Moon landings were
real.

In this episode of Thursday's Classroom, students can learn more about
hoaxes and how to spot them. Activities include "April Fool's Number
Tricks Day" (a math exercise that will delight kids), "Hoax Happens" (kids
create their own hoaxes supported by an amusing satire about the voyages
of Columbus), "Hoax Cuisine!" (perhaps the first-ever edible hoax), and
much more.
