The materials and cryogenic costs are prohibitive for high temperature
superconductor transmission lines. There is one short length demonstration
project in Detroit - funded partially by DOE. For more info, see

This is completely different technology than was to be use in the SSC - the
SSC magnets were all to be made from NbTi- conventional low temperature
superconductor.

A Sci Am article discussed this -- described a test line -- some time ago.

thought by now we'd have super conducting transmission lines -- A "spin
off"
from the SCSC?
