I might have missed earlier parts of the thread.
If you are talking about solving simultaneous equations or simply
matrix inversion (involving numeric values), Excel has excellent
matrix funtions built in. It makes solving simultaneous equations a
snap. Quattro also has matrix functions.

If dealing with H.S. or Intro. physics students, one doesn't have to
make a big deal about matrix algebra (the equations look the same as
ordinary algebra), but it provides an opportunity to inform the
students that there are topics in math that they might not know about
but that are very useful to scientists and others.
