Not the ancient dict., the more ancient reader. Comparing the two
definitions makes this clear.

It's not phlogiston that is the enemy; it's caloric.
caloric is alive and actively misconceiving!

Your dictionary is off track. "Phlogiston" is the substance which was
associated with fire. Caloric is the substance which was associated
with heat. It was the unlimited creation of caloric, presumably a
finite quantity of substance, in the bottom of a cannon by a dull
boring tool that led Count Rumford to doubt its supposed nature.

(This is not the first instance of scientific discovery having been
associated with a dull, boring tool.)
