Re: Transformer power consumption

Following data from Weston model 423 Watt meter ( ca. 1950? mirror scale so = 5%
<FS> expected, 5W / div.)

since in all cases, except the speaker when loud, the consumption is about < 5W,
one may expect = 20%

radio phone: 5 W stand by, + one W in use

radio speaker: same, 15 W peaks

Braun Teeth brush charger: barely detectable (< 1/2 W) charging = one W.

I unplug the transformers as the on / off switch -- I've been unplugging the Teeth
charger - no longer will.

I've left on the porch light ('till the AIDS crisis is over), but six months ago
switched to a fluorescent (6 W) Now on 'till midnight.

P.s. Though low tech, this meter (d' Arsonval) automatically incorporates power
factor correction (normally a permanent magnet field replaced by an electromagnet,
the current and the voltage the rotor)

P.p.s. The question: Is Raymond going to with hold the marginal increase as the
Greens (Ms. Benjamin) recommend?

In a recent flyer from our local utility company, PG&E (Pacific Graft &

unplug all those little power supply transformers for devices that use this type
of external power supply. It was stated that these devices consume energy even
if the device that they power is turned off.

I realize that when you plug in one of these transformers you are placing the
primary across the AC line and even the device that they power is off there
might be some energy consumed, perhaps in the form of hysterisis heating of the
transformer core.

Does anyone have any information as to what might be the typical energy use of
these devices when their powered devices are off?
