In addition to the already-referenced Chronicle article, go to the AAUP web
site (http://www.aaup.org)and find the policy document on the use of
part-time and non-tenure track faculty.
Institutions like to use them, based on a faulty business model of
"flexibility" - which, as already pointed out, is a euphemism for
exploitation (lower pay, few if any benefits, no long-term commitment in
either direction). The issue is not simply utilitarian - it has an ethical
dimension which we, as professionals, ought not overlook.
